Siena is one of the most beautiful town in Tuscany, a flourishing city, a prestigious University town and culture centre, but the historic centre has remained as beautiful as it was in the past. The central feature of the old town is the Piazza del Campo, a scallop-shaped square dominated by the massive façade of the Town Hall with its tower named Torre del Mangia. Twice a year, on the 2nd of July and on the 16th of August in the Piazza del Campo is the Palio, one of the most spectacular bareback horse races in the world.
