Casetta Franca is everyone's idea of the ideal Tuscan country cottage. It has vines and roses around the door and in front of the house there is a delightful garden, that is ideal for sunbathing or catching up on some quiet reading. There is a paved courtyard opposite the front door with a table, chairs and sun umbrella where you can sit to enjoy a drink in the sun, and eat all your meals.
The open-plan kitchen has a half-wall dividing it from the dining area. An old ship's gangway leads up to a relaxing sitting room with an open fireplace and lovely views across the valley. The two sofas can become comfortable divan beds at night. There is a double bedroom and lovely bathroom with a bath.
Add to this the character of the village of Varano with its authentic smells of Italian cooking, wood smoke and fermenting wine, and you may begin to understand why this house is so popular. River bathing is within a few minutes drive or can be reached on foot through the hills.
Parking is about 200m away in the village square from which the paved and wide-stepped path winds downwards.
The little village is a paradise for children, who can run around its winding streets and alleys in complete safety. There are no cars and the local villagers notice everything that happens in their village. One of the old ladies seems to spend a lot of the day doing her washing at the communal washing fountain.
For the cooler seasons, the house has an open fire, a woodburning stove in the kitchen, which warms the whole house, and now also has gas central heating.
